DARRO PACED BACK AND forth in his study, his thoughts centered on the phone call and Marissa’s hysterical and accusing voice when he’d answered.

“Yer housekeeper is a thief, and I want her arrested.”

Once in his study, he’d replied to her accusation. “What are ye talking about, Marissa?”

“When I went to bed last night, I realized my diamond tennis bracelet was missing,” she’d screeched hotly. “The last time I wore it was at yer house. I’ve looked in my car, retraced all my steps since I got home, but it’s not here. I must have lost it there. Has she reported it to ye?”

“What makes ye think Lucerne took it?”

“Oh, so ye know her name isn’t actually Lacy? I know because I checked with the inspector, and he’d never heard of Lacy Mackenzie. But he knew what Lucerne looked like,” she replied snidely.

“I’ve known all along who she is. What difference does that make? And what the devil are ye doing checking up on my housekeeper?”

“There was something suspicious about her when I met her, I was trying to protect ye,” Marissa declared. “If she’d lie to ye about who she is, then she wouldn’t be above stealing either, would she? And if she’d found it, she would have given it to ye to return to me, but I bet she hasn’t, has she?”

“Accusing someone of stealing is a very serious offense.”

“She’s no going to get away with this,” she’d replied adamantly.

Darro stopped pacing to peer out the window through the relentlessly falling snow. The swirling flakes seemed to mock the disaster his life had suddenly become. Marissa had been completely unreasonable. His first impression had been that she was playing games with him again. It wouldn’t be the first time her jealousy had come out, even in their teen years.

Their conversation had been long and painful and left Darro in a disconcerted mood during dinner. He knew he’d been gruff and distant with Lucerne and the kids both, but he needed to figure a way out of all this, and Lucerne needed to be told. He just hadn’t wanted to ruin everyone’s day when they were all closed in together. He was afraid he had anyway.

At least the rest of the day after the phone call.

He’d fought with himself as to whether to begin searching the house for the bracelet, but then he’d hesitated, wondering if that was the best way to handle it. If he’d found it and presented it to her, she would feel he was accusing her and that’s the last thing he wanted to do.

Turning away from the window, he began pacing again. Darro was 99.9% sure that Lucerne hadn’t touched the bracelet. Or if she had found it and set it up somewhere, she’d been too busy to mention it and forgotten about it. Although he didn’t believe that she’d stolen it, he still had to consider the possibility anyway. After all, he barely knew her. And that had been the crux of his conundrum all day.
